Most of the songs have a romantic love interest but are very tame by today’s standards in pop music.

¡Hola, Mi Amigo! is the CD/Book package that I can recommend for immersion studentsof all ages. The CD of 6 catchy, upbeat and melodic songs includes the following themes:

1) ¡Hola, Mi Amigo! is about two young friends who spend a Saturday listening to music, dancing, eating ice cream, going to the cinema, and at the end of their eventful day, they say goodbye to each other.

2) ¿Dónde Está Mi Gato? seems to have become a classic among Spanish students all across the country. It is about a boy (or a girl) who is looking for his or her cat, and in this search, the listener is exposed to a variety of prepositional phrases of location (under, behind, in, etc.).

3) La Naturaleza is about Nature and teaches the feminine/masculine and singular/plural agreement among nouns and adjectives.

4) Pobre Vagabundo has vaguely spiritual implications, about a journey to visit mom, dad, brother and sister on the other side (it is nearly a perfect translation of this “Negro spiritual.”

5) Cuando Hace Frío illustrates the four seasons and the clothes, colors, and weather situations.

6) ¿Cómo Es? is a cute song about a blind date where the singer asks what his date is like, where she’s from, and what she does for a living. This is the only song that touches on romantic themes at all on this CD. You can view the complete lyrics here.

About the Author

I have taught Spanish at both the secondary and college level, and have created the Musicapaedia™ series of songs and lessons to fill the great need for students to supplement their formal study with upbeat, melodic songs, which I have spent the last 25 years writing. They were originally in English (I had a band and tried to be the “next Beatles,” but alas…), but noting with surprise the scarcity of effective lessons using music, I decided to re-write my songs in Spanish to teach the language.

In so doing, I kept three things in mind, in order to avoid the songs and lessons from being sterile, uninspired, too “teachy”, or useless for teaching (over 90% of pop songs are nearly useless for beginners because the grammar is too advanced and there is no vocabulary theme focus). What was needed for an absolute guarantee of appeal and success, especially for beginners and intermediate level students, were:

1) the songs had to be great (you’ll have to be the judge of that!). No one will bother to listen, or follow up in the learning, if the songs are not musically catchy or appealing (my songwriting inspiration is the Beatles, as well as generally the classic rock of the 60s and early 70s. This just so happens to be the music I like, and it just so happens to appeal to all ages!);

2) the lyrics had to be focused on grammar points that are normally taught together -- for example the verb “ser” (to be) with the descriptive adjectives of people using the feminine/masculine/singular/plural endings in Spanish (“Ell a es guap a; Él es guap o, etc.), that everyone must learn early on (click here to see the Table of Contents/two-dimensional index to the 2003 book and CD “La Flor de Potosí, for what is taught by each song). At the same time, the lyrics had to tell a story or paint a picture as any good song would -- not an easy task, but I did it! Two of the three books contain songs that are almost entirely in the present tense so that beginners may learn through music in this fun way! There is nothing that compares to this in the entire world (--a “grand claim” I know, but google and find out for yourself if this is not true);

3) there had to be a lesson activities book that went beyond a simple side-by-side of the lyrics in both languages, or extension activities that required special cultural knowledge, or clapping your hands at certain intervals, or simply filling in missing words in the song from a “wordbank” (although the latter is an absolutely wonderful way of first listening to the songs, and is an important part of the Musicapaedia™ program!) In a word, I used every pedagogical trick in the book to milk the most out of each song’s lyrics, for the purpose of teaching and learning the language. The exercises speak for themselves.
